Autumn Layering Without the Bulk
Three layers that still let you move — and the one mistake that ruins every autumn outfit.
Most autumn layering fails for the same reason: every layer is too thick. A chunky knit under a chunky coat under a bulky scarf adds up to thirty percent more volume than you actually need.
Start thinner than you think. A fine-gauge merino or a lightweight long-sleeve as your base, a shirt as your middle, and a properly sized coat as the outer. The coat should be the only bulky layer.
The second mistake is mismatched volume. If everything is loose, nothing has shape. Pair one relaxed piece with one fitted piece — a roomy coat over a slim jumper, or a fitted blazer over a wide trouser.
Finally, leave the third button undone. It is a small thing, but it is the difference between a coat and a rumpled blanket.
