Buying Better
The Permanent Wardrobe Test
Thirty wears before you commit. How to tell the difference between a classic and a passing phase.
Every fashion brand eventually writes the word timeless on a product page. Rarely do they mean it. Timeless is not a shape, it is a behaviour, and behaviour can be measured.
The test is simple: give a piece thirty wears across one full season before you decide it is a keeper. Thirty is not arbitrary. It is roughly once a week for two months, which is long enough to get through a heatwave and a cold snap.
If a piece makes it to thirty wears without you consciously hunting for it, it is working. If it needs coaxing every time, the problem is not the item — it is that you bought it for a version of yourself that has moved on.
This approach does more than save money. It trains your eye. After a year of thirty-wear tests, you stop being tempted by novelty, because you can see clearly which pieces earn their place.
